'We gave US al-Qaida suspects'

Updated on 26 February 2009

By Simon Israel

Defence Secretary John Hutton reveals that British troops did hand over two al-Qaida suspects to the US, despite official denials.

The government has apologised to MPs for denying any part in Iraq terror renditions, where suspects were handed over to the Americans to be secretly flown to Afghanistan and interrogated.

Hutton also said officials had been aware of the incident in 2004, with lengthy references in papers sent to two cabinet ministers who have since denied all knowledge.
