Tory expenses repayments 'significant'

By Channel 4 News

Updated on 25 June 2009

Conservative MPs have now repaid a quarter of a million pounds in expenses claims - not perfection, admits David Cameron, but "a significant step". Read the repayments details here.

Shadow minister Eleanor Laing is paying back £25,000 in capital gains tax. And Sir Peter Viggers is handing over the £10,000 he claimed to spruce up his lawn.

Conservative MPs have now repaid another £125,000 of expenses claims, making a total of a quarter of a million pounds since the scandal began.

Following an investigation by an internal party committee, the Tory leader David Cameron said it was just one step towards restoring some trust and faith in the political system.

In an interview with Channel 4 News, Cameron said: "What you see today is the Conservative party individually and collectively coming together to say the system wasn't good enough.

"I wouldn't claim this is perfection - there are inconsistencies... But I think it is a significant step."
