New mothers could receive dedicated help from a maternity nurse for a week after giving birth, under proposals being considered by the Conservatives.

The party is looking at a scheme in the Netherlands where maternity nurses help mothers care for their babies, carry out household chores and ensure older children are properly fed.

In Britain women could receive up to six hours of assistance a day, but it's not clear how the costs would be met.
