Fuel supplies in Devon and Cornwall could begin to run dry as early as this evening, according to leaders of the union involved in the four-day Shell tanker drivers' strike.
The Unite union is picketing two fuel depots in Plymouth, which are the only source of fuel for the two counties, and shop stewards say drivers from every company have agreed not to cross picket lines.
The strike, by 600 drivers employed by two sub-contractor companies who deliver Shell fuel, is already hitting supplies across the country.
The prime minister said this morning that contingency plans to minimise disruption are in place and urged both sides to return to the negotiating table.
