Strike ban for prison officers

Updated on 07 January 2008

By Andy Davies

Three years after lifting it, the government is to reimpose a strike ban on prison officers.

Prison officers are to be banned from striking by the government, just three years after ministers changed the law allowing them to take industrial action.

The Conservatives accused the government of incompetence after Justice Secretary Jack Straw announced the plans in the Commons.

But Mr Straw said the ban would only apply if a deal couldn't be negotiated with prison officers.
