Scottish National Party leader Alex Salmond is elected first minister at Holyrood, in Edinburgh.
Members of the Scottish parliament voted for him to replace Labour's Jack McConnell afer two weeks of negotiations following the 3 May elections.
The first nationalist leader in Scotland, Mr Salmond's party does not have an overall majority in parliament and will need to seek consensus.
In his opening speech Mr Salmond promised to govern wholly and exclusively in the Scottish national interest.
