Running battles in heart of London

By Alex Thomson

Updated on 01 April 2009

Riot police fought to keep control as protesters attacked the Royal Bank of Scotland, smashing windows and briefly breaking inside.

But there were only a handful of arrests as demonstrators clashed with police otuside the Bank of England, pelting them with paint and eggs.

The protests began this morning, as a group calling itself G20 Meltdown set out down separate routes, dubbed "the four horsemen of the apocalypse".

"The silver horse against financial crimes" gathered at London Bridge station, a "black horse against land closures and borders" at Cannon Street, "the green horse against climate change" at Liverpool Street and "the red horse against war" started from Moorgate Station.
