The MPs' expenses scandal overshadows the local and European elections as early signs suggest Labour has lost a vital foothold.

The comings and goings in government have tended to overshadow yesterday's local and European elections.

But the results could give an insight into how badly damaged each of the parties have been by the MPs' expenses scandal.

And from the early county council results so far, the signs do not look good for Labour.
