Prostitution: no more excuses

Updated on 19 November 2008

By Cathy Newman

The Home Office introduces new laws that target those who use prostitutes "controlled for another person's gain".

Having sex with a prostitute who is controlled by a pimp, or one who has been trafficked into the UK, will be a criminal offence under new proposals from the government.

After reviewing vice laws in other countries, the Home Office says it is taking a tough approach that will mean "no more excuses" for men who pay for sex.

But critics question whether criminalisation is the way to crack down on the trade.

Harriet Harman

Krishnan Guru-Murthy interviews the women's minister Harriet Harman, who has previously said paying for sex should be outlawed.
