Police to investigate donor scandal
Updated on 29 November 2007
Having refused to comment for days, the electoral commission finally intervened in Labour's donor scandal tonight, referring the case to the police.
Scotland Yard appointed a Commander to investigate, but revealed that Assistant Commissioner John Yates, who led the cash-for-honours inquiry will advise.
The Met's involvement became inevitable after Gordon Brown admitted earlier in the week that the party's acceptance of a series of donations from a third party was unlawful.
All this came after the party's deputy leader Harriet Harman had as torrid a time in the Commons today as her boss did yesterday, as she tried to insist she hadn't broken the law.
