Having refused to comment for days, the electoral commission finally intervened in Labour's donor scandal tonight, referring the case to the police.

Scotland Yard appointed a Commander to investigate, but revealed that Assistant Commissioner John Yates, who led the cash-for-honours inquiry will advise.

The Met's involvement became inevitable after Gordon Brown admitted earlier in the week that the party's acceptance of a series of donations from a third party was unlawful.

All this came after the party's deputy leader Harriet Harman had as torrid a time in the Commons today as her boss did yesterday, as she tried to insist she hadn't broken the law.
