The prime minister has spoken out, insisting that service personnel should wear their uniforms with pride and that the public should back them.
"I condemn absolutely any members of the public who show abuse or discrimination to our armed forces," he said.
Gordon Brown's statement was prompted by the revelation yesterday that the commander of RAF Wittering had told his personnel last year not to wear their uniforms when in Peterborough due to a number of incidents of verbal abuse.
The uniform row coincides with a medal ceremony today celebrating the heroism of members of the armed forces in Afghanistan and Iraq.
