The head of the UK Statistics Authority says figures claiming the crackdown on knife crime is working should not have been published.
The government has been accused of leaking "selective" and "unchecked" figures to support its claim that its knife crime policy is working.
In an announcement yesterday the home secretary Jacqui Smith said that there had been a sharp fall in the number of teenagers caught carrying knives in areas in ten English hotspots.
