Nimrod explosion due to fuel leak

Updated on 04 December 2007

By Keme Nzerem

An inquiry into the Nimrod reconnaissance plane crash in Afghanistan last year said leaking fuel was the probable cause.

The biggest single loss of British servicemen's lives since the Falklands War was also caused by ageing components and a lack of modern fire suppressants, the report said.

In the Commons, the defence secretary apologised to the families of the 14 people killed, said air-to-air refuelling had been suspended and announced a review of the "airworthiness and safe operation" of the remaining Nimrod fleet.
