The government's new legislative programme is to be pruned so that it can devote more time to dealing with the economy.

Four bills from the draft list that Gordon Brown announced six months ago will either have been scrapped or merged when the Queen reads the list to parliament in a fortnight's time.

Could this also mean there is an early election in the offing, cashing in on the prime minister's recent boost in the polls?
