MPs’ expenses report heavily censored

Documents detailing MPs' expenses claims published by parliament today conceal more than they reveal, as Victoria Macdonald reports.

It was meant to be the moment when we learned just what our MPs were receiving from the taxpayer in expenses and allowances.

But after a month of explicit revelations in the Daily Telegraph newspaper and a series of high-profile resignations, today's publication conceals rather more than it reveals.

And the official version came hours after the Telegraph had claimed its latest scalp.

Treasury Minister Kitty Ussher was forced to stand down after the paper revealed she had saved up to £17,000 in tax by "flipping" between her constituency and London homes shortly before selling one of them.
