As the Metropolitan Police start examining the payments from businessman David Abrahams, Jack Straw says the donations were illegal, but very few people knew about them.

A senior Cabinet minister added that Gordon Brown had "absolutely no knowledge" of secret donations paid to the Labour party.

The controversy has now also drawn in another Cabinet member, Peter Hain, who's admitted failing to register a donation.
