Million off benefits and in work

By Katie Razzall

Updated on 10 December 2008

Work and Pensions Secretary James Purnell says anyone refusing to take up training or a job offer will be penalised.

Purnell insists the changes will transform peoples' lives, with radical government plans to be unveiled later today aiming to see one million people off benefits and into work.

But some labour backbenchers are accusing the government of dismantling the welfare state and getting their priorities wrong in economically tough times.
