McGuinness condemns police killing

Updated on 10 March 2009

By Channel 4 News

Northern Ireland's deputy first minister Martin McGuinness has described those who killed a policeman in Craigavon as "traitors to the island of Ireland".

McGuinness, who was a senior IRA commander in the 1970s, spoke alongside first minister Peter Robinson and chief constable Hugh Orde and insisted the shooting of constable Stephen Carroll will not affect the peace process.

The dissident group Continuity IRA claimed responsibility for the shooting in a coded message, which announced killings will continue "as long as there is British involvement in Ireland".
