The SNP have overtaken Labour as the largest party in the Scottish parliament as voters delivered Tony Blair a bruising blow in local elections across Britain.

After a day of the tightest of political contests and a voting debacle worthy of a banana republic - the final result put the SNP two seats ahead.

It is a damning verdict on Tony Blair's decade in power and is a massive challenge bequeathed upon his successor, Gordon Brown.

The SNP now have 47 seats - picking up an extra 20 - just ahead of Labour which now has 46 seats. The Conservatives have 17, the Liberal Democrats 16 and other parties took the remaining three.
