Labour win 'vote of confidence'

Updated on 07 November 2008

By James Blake

The prime minister hails Labour's victory in the Glenrothes by-election as a vote of confidence in the response to the economic crisis.

Labour's Lindsay Roy retained the seat with a reduced, but still sizeable, majority of almost 7,000 votes, confounding expectations that it could fall to the Scottish National Party.

Gordon Brown, who represents a neighbouring constituency, twice visited Glenrothes during the by-election campaign.
