Labour slumps to third in local polls

With the London mayoral results still to be announced, estimates suggest Labour has picked up just 24 per cent of the vote in yesterday's local elections in England and Wales.
A "bad" and "disappointing night" for Labour - Gordon Brown's response this morning to a series of local election results that saw his already depleted ranks of councillors driven down still further across the country.
But with the London results still to come and further misery expected for Labour, the prime minister's comments are in danger of being a significant under-statement.

On current estimates the Conservatives have picked up 44 percent of the vote, well ahead of the Liberal Democrats with 25 per cent and Labour in third place with just 24 per cent.
So far the Conservatives have over 150 more councillors than they did this time yesterday.
Labour has lost over 160, with the Lib Dems making just marginal gains.
