It was meant to be a statement on counter-terrorism but instead the Home Secretary finds herself in a row over breaching election rules.

The Conservatives say government plans to recruit 300 new police officers shouldn't have been released so soon before May's local elections and they've complained to the cabinet secretary.

Channel 4 News has learned that the Home Office actually overruled cabinet office advice not to make the announcement at this time.
