The Justice Secretary Jack Straw has issued a statement saying he's "absolutely convinced" Gordon Brown should stay as Prime Minister.

Several newspapers reported that a close ally of his has been gathering names to support a move against Mr Brown in the autumn.

The former deputy prime minister John Prescott said potential successors do not have the ''skills and experience nationally and internationally'' to replace Mr Brown.
