The Tory's accuse Gordon brown of  scandalous dereliction of duty in Afghanistan, Mr Cameron tells Channel 4 News tonight: he's still not satisfied.

'We've said very clearly we support our troops, but not only that we support the mission in Afghanistan,' he said.

'But we wouldn't be doing our job properly as an opposition, as a responsible opposition, if we didn't ask questions tough and searching questions about the availability of helicopters, about the numbers of troops, about the conduct of the war.'

'I think it is a scandal and I feel confident in saying it,' he went on, describing his own visits to Afghanistan and calls for helicopters in 2006. 'My point is this: if the government three years ago had really wanted to do more they could have done so.'
