Home Office: economic gloom could increase crime rates

A leaked letter from the Home Secretary warns that the economic downturn could lead to an increase in crime and extremism.

The draft letter to the Prime Minister predicted rising numbers of burglaries and car break-ins, as well as hostility towards migrants.

It's just a "statement of the blindingly obvious" a Home Office minister claimed today.

Tony McNulty, said it was 'perfectly normal' for the Home Secretary to keep Downing Street informed of the potential effects of the credit crunch.
