After five years detention Jamil el Banna was tonight free on bail, but he faces the very real possibility of extradition to Spain.

His release follows 24 hours of confusion and legal wrangling.

As the private jet chartered to bring the three men back to Britain touched down last night, their families, on police advice, were expecting them home within hours.

But the situation changed dramatically as a Spanish extradition warrant came through taking everyone, including the authorities here it seems, by surprise.
