Government figures back Gordon Brown as contest calls grow

Senior cabinet ministers have rallied behind Gordon Brown as more backbench MPs joined calls for a leadership contest.

But the Foreign secretary David Miliband, who has been tipped as a potential successor to the Prime Minister, was not among them.

He threw his support behind Mr Brown although he admitted these are very challenging times for the Labour party.
