Government equality drive

Updated on 26 June 2008

By Victoria Macdonald

The equalities minister, Harriet Harman, outlines to MPs a new government bill to transform equality and discrimination law.

In the last few minutes Harriet Harman announced: "A radical shift in our approach to fighting unfairness and breathing fresh life into our equality agenda".

Action on ageism, sexism and unfairness in job recruitment and pay are all included, along with plans to outlaw restrictions on the provision of services, such as insurance, to older people.

But critics say the laws could end up discriminating against young, white men.
