Gordon Brown tells Labour conference to 'face down' the tough times

Updated on 23 September 2008

By Gary Gibbon

In a make or break speech, Gordon Brown tells the Labour party conference that this is no time for a novice, insisting "I know what I believe. I know who I am."

In a speech which brought this conference to its feet not once, but three times, the prime minister also said "I know that the way to deal with tough times is to face them down."

And he signalled a return to Labour's core values. "Fairness," he said, "is our DNA."

A tribute to NHS staff drew loud applause, as did the one piece of real policy - a pledge that prescription charges for patients with cancer and other long-term conditions would be scrapped across England over the next year at a cost of some £20m.

But was it all too late to save Gordon Brown's political career?

Gary Gibbon reports.
