Glasgow North East win for Labour
Updated on 13 November 2009
Labour hail a "resounding victory for Gordon Brown" as they survive the latest by-election test by cruising to a comfortable victory over the Scottish National Party in Glasgow North East.
Labour candidate Willie Bain won the seat with a majority of 8,111 after the post was made vacant by the resignation of former Commons Speaker Michael Martin.
After a tempestuous week for Prime Minister Gordon Brown the result came as relief to the Labour party. Last year they faced a humiliating defeat after Glasgow East fell to the nationalists.
The far-right British National Party fell to fourth place despite predictions that they would beat the Conservatives. Ruth Davidson gained 1,075 votes putting the Conservatives in third place. The Liberal Democrats fell into sixth place with just 474 votes.
Winning candidate Willie Bain declared it had been "a great day for Labour" in his victory speech.
"This is a resounding victory for Gordon Brown and Labour.
"This by-election has been about many things but most of all it has been about jobs and the economy.
"Tonight people have had their say. They have backed Gordon Brown in his efforts to secure our economic recovery, they have sent a resounding "No" to (SNP leader) Alex Salmond and his treatment of our great city and a resounding "No" to David Cameron."
