Will he? Won't he? Gordon Brown gives nothing away about a snap election as the Labour conference opens in Bournmouth.

For years Gordon Brown longed for the leadership of his party to lead this party - tomorrow in his first leader's speech - he must explain what he intends to do with it.

There's a danger that his first conference gets drowned out with speculation about the election date but Labour ministers are finding it difficulty to conceal their excitement at the latest polling evidence.

And in his first interview on British politics since Gordon Brown took over we spoke to Peter Mandelson - once Labour's election strategist, long Gordon Brown's foe.

Tonight Gordon Brown is touring receptions. One friend said the prime minister was still wedded to using the coming months for policy announcements and leaving an election till next year or beyond.
