Funding chaos for free buses

Free nationwide bus travel for the over 60s has been massively popular since it was launched last year.

But the arrangements for funding it are throwing some councils into financial turmoil.

Some local authorities have surpluses, while others have suffered big losses, and they risk having to cut bus routes and other services as a result.

The government has launched a consultation on how to fix the scheme, but councils and transport operators face a mimimum of two more years of chaos.
