Updated on 29 June 2009

By Andy Davies

Exclusive: Channel 4 News has uncovered allegations that some staff at companies hired by the government to help the long-term unemployed to find work have been engaged in fraudulent activity. The allegations relate to three companies who have been running welfare to work schemes for the government. Andy Davies reports.

Hiring private companies to help people find work has been one of new Labour's defining policies.

But following an investigation by Channel 4 News into the government's welfare to work programme, the chair of parliament's work and pensions select committee has called for the National Audit Office to investigate the industry.

Channel 4 News has uncovered evidence of fabricated paperwork and of results being faked in some of the biggest companies hired to help the long-term unemployed.
