Former MP quits Labour party

By Krishnan Guru-Murthy

Updated on 18 April 2009

Veteran Labour rebel Alice Mahon leaves the party blaming the PM, but has she fumbled the attack by telling Channel 4 News she will still vote Labour?

Alice Mahon has been a member for 50 years - she was practically "born into the Labour party".

But she says sending more troops to Afghanistan and the recent email smears have "betrayed" the values and principles that inspired her to join.

The former MP for Halifax, who is now 71, says many colleagues feel similarly "desperate" and "dispirited."
