Ed Balls attacks Frank Field after the Labour rebel suggested Mr Brown would not lead his party into the next election. Gary Gibbon reports.

One of Gordon Brown's closest allies has attacked a rebel Labour MP who claimed he would be "surprised" if Mr Brown was still party leader by the time of the next general election.

Frank Field claimed the prime minister was "unhappy" - and should talk to his family about stepping down.

But the schools secretary, Ed Balls, suggested Mr Field was acting dishonourably, and branded him a loner.

It is all more trouble for Labour after a weekend of political revelations.
