Energy companies to help fund £900m package to tackle soaring fuel bills

Gordon Brown unveils a £900m package, funded by the energy companies, to help millions of people with rising fuel bills

The measures will include help with home insulation, lower fuel prices for poor households and a trebling of pensioners' cold weather payments, but no windfall tax on the profits of the energy companies.
And the companies are refusing to guarantee that these costs won't be passed back to householders in higher bills, with questions remaining about how the measures will help vulnerable people this winter.
