Emails row: Tories want PM apology

Updated on 12 April 2009

By Channel 4 News

The Tories are demanding an apology from Gordon Brown over his special adviser Damian McBride's smear attempt.

The Conservative leader, David Cameron, has demanded a personal apology from Gordon Brown over the emails sent by one of his closest advisers, discussing smear stories about leading Tories.

Mr Cameron is said to be "absolutely furious" and wants the prime minister to guarantee that similar messages will not be sent in future.

Damian McBride was forced to resign last night after the emails were made public.

They included unfounded rumours about Mr Cameron.

One Labour MP has called for an independent inquiry into who was involved.
