Election 2010 - power to the people?

By Channel 4 News

Updated on 11 January 2010

With just months to go until a general election, many groups are trying to stamp their mark on the political parties. David Fuller looks how one organisation is trying a different approach.

Election 2010

Power 2010 says it is different, because all its ideas come direct from the public.

The group organised a unique event last weekend where 200 people from across the country met in London to debate ideas for cleaning up and renewing politics.

Among the proposals were changes to the voting system, and greater devolution and how MPs could become more accountable.

The people attending the event were selected to represent the UK through their demographics and attitudes. They discussed a manifesto for democratic reform, based on nearly 4,500 submissions made by the public over the past three months.

Their plans will be put to a public vote from Monday 18 January. Those that are the most popular will be put to all election candidates.
