The SNP has surged to historic victory over Labour and become the Scottish Parliament's largest party on a gloomy final election day for Tony Blair.

In Wales Labour lost three seats but remains the largest party. In England the Conservatives made big gains.

It hasn't been a great night for the Liberal Democrats - they're likely to be down to 24 per cent with other parties on 8 per cent nationally - with gains for nationalists in Wales and Scotland.

With results from around half of the English councils which held elections yesterday, the Tories are the only winners.

They've gained 361 councillors, with Labour losing 163, the Liberal Democrats 136 and other parties being down by 63 council seats.

In the Scottish Parliament, the SNP won 47 of the 129 seats, compared with Labour's 46.

The Tories won 17, the Lib Dems 16, the Greens two, with independent Margo MacDonald also re-elected.

Wales has the nearest thing to a complete picture- with only eight seats left to declare, Labour have done better than many expected, with 26 assembly members so far.

Plaid Cymru have gained three seats, taking them to 11, with the Conservatives on 9, and the Liberal Democrats on 5 - meaning that a Labour Liberal Democrat coalition would have a majority.

There's one independent so far.

In Scotland, it's still too close to call between Labour and the SNP owing to problems with electronic counting, but so far Labour have 32 seats, with the SNP on 29, the Liberal democrats on 12 and the Tories on 7, having lost one seat.

The Green Party also has one seat. 48 seats have yet to be declared.
