Dunfermline sale the only option?

Alistair Darling defends the decision to put Scotland's biggest building society up for sale, saying the deal was the only way to prevent it from going bust.

But protestors outside the Dunfermline Building Society headquarters in Fife demanded to know why it could not have been supported and kept independent.

The chancellor promised it would be business as usual for customers after the Nationwide took over the core parts of the business, backed by more than £1.5bn worth of public money guarantees for its risky assets.
