Does Charles Clarke's ambush have the support of Labour MPs?
Updated on 04 September 2008
There is a backlash from Labour MPs after Charles Clarke's warnings that the PM must improve within a few weeks.
Gordon Brown has just "weeks or months" to improve his performance or else he should stand down.
The former Home Secretary Charles Clarke today took to the airwaves to broaden his attack on the prime minister.
He said many cabinet ministers think Mr Brown should go and there should now be an open discussion about his future and that of the Labour party, which he said was staring into an electoral abyss.
His intervention has sparked an angry reaction from some Labour MPs who accuse him of misreading their mood.
