The prime minister describes David Davis' decision to force a by-election as "a stunt that has become a farce".
The former editor of The Sun newspaper, Kelvin MacKenzie, has hinted that he might stand on a "law and order" ticket.
The Liberal Democrats have already announced that they will not contest the by-election and Labour look certain to follow suit.
The shadow home secretary resigned as an MP over the issue of civil liberty.
