Either a masterstroke or a disaster, the verdict of one Tory MP after the shock resignation of the shadow home secretary, David Davis.
Mr Davis surprised Westminster and the Conservative party by announcing he wanted to force a by election in his Haltemprice and Howden constituency over the issue of detaining terror suspects for 42 days without charge.
The Liberal Democrats say they won't be fielding a candidate against him. Labour is also unlikely to stand.
Conservative sources have denied suggestions of a huge rift between Mr Davis and the party's leader, David Cameron, who called Mr Davis's move an "individual decision".
