The chancellor tells rebel Labour MPs he will respond to their concerns of the abolition of the 10p tax rate.

The chancellor has promised Labour MPs he will act on their concerns over the abolition of the 10p tax rate "within the next financial year".

He met backbenchers in groups this afternoon in an attempt to avert a government defeat in the finance bill committee next week.

39 MPs have signed an amendment tabled by former minister Frank Field - enough to overturn the government's majority.

There were signs today that some MPs could be persuaded by the government's charm offensive - but still not enough to avert defeat.
