Conservatives: 'regret' not enough

The Conservative party demands a Cabinet Office inquiry into who knew what and when over suggestions of a smear campaign against senior party members.

It says Gordon Brown's letter yesterday expressing "regret" over the leaked emails from his former special adviser, Damian McBride, did not go far enough.

The prime minister's spokesman told reporters that there was "a huge amount of frustration" at Number 10 that the controversy was diverting attention from attempts to solve the "real problems" facing the country.
