Coastguards first strike - over pay

Up to 700 staff at rescue centres across the UK are taking part in the 24-hour walk-out.

Coastguard employees say their wages have fallen below salaries for the other emergency services, forcing them to take strike action for the first time in their history.

It leaves the English Channel under the control of the French military.
