Climate change targets could end fossil fuel power production

Britain's ambitious targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions must be stepped up still further to achieve a reduction of at least 80 per cent by 2050.

That's the conclusion of the government's own committee on climate change, who describe the new aim as "challenging but feasible".

Because it is unlikely that aviation and shipping emissions will be cut so drastically, it could mean Britain will abandon all fossil fuels to produce power within the next 20 years.
