Claims row claims more MPs
Updated on 28 May 2009
Senior Tory Bill Cash is the latest MP caught in the expenses row after Conservative MP Julie Kirkbride and Labour's Margaret Moran bowed to pressure to step down yesterday.
Tory grandee Bill Cash claimed more than £15,000 of public money to pay the rent on his daughter's London flat, according to the latest expenses revelations.
Mr Cash was today facing questions over why he chose to designate a flat owned by his daughter Laetitia as his "second home" for Commons allowances during 2004 and 2005 - when he owned a home closer to Westminster.
The MP for Stone in Staffordshire, whose main home is a country house in Shropshire, said he did not live at his Pimlico flat or rent it out at the time.
Kirkbride and Moran quit over expenses
The expenses scandal claimed more MPs. After a valiant battle to save her seat, the expenses disclosures finally toppled Tory MPJulie Kirkbride.
Ms Kirkbride said she had worked hard to juggle her job as an MP with her "life as a wife and mum" – but it was not enough to save her job.
Labour MP Margaret Moran fell foul of tens of thousands of pounds of dry rot treatment at her partner's home, miles from both her constituency and Westminster.
And Conservative MP Christopher Fraser has announced he is standing down for family reasons.
We did contact a wide range of MPs from the main political parties but no-one wanted to talk to us about this particular issue today. Instead Jon Snow is joined by political commentators Matthew Parris and Polly Toynbee.
