CBI: diploma plans 'undermining'
Updated on 23 June 2008
Business leaders turn against government proposals to extend academic diplomas to traditional subjects.
They have called on the government to reconsider their plans for new academic diplomas, claiming that the plans are over-ambitious and a distraction which could undermine the integrity of traditional subjects.
Students aged between 14 and 19 can already take diplomas in vocational subjects. But the new proposals would extend them to languages, humanities and sciences - which the CBI has now turned against.
The government said it was "surprised" at the negative response, insisting the idea had widespread support.
