Cameron: 'Pay up or face expulsion'
Updated on 12 May 2009
Tory MPs whose expenses are judged unethical will have to repay them or face expulsion from the party.
They claimed taxpayers' money for swimming pool upkeep, housekeepers, moat cleaning, even supplies of horse manure. Now all Tory MPs - including shadow cabinet members - will have to pay back thousands of pounds in "excessive" expenses claims - or face expulsion from the party.
The Conservative leader David Cameron said he was sorry for the actions of some of his MPs. He described some of the claims as "appalling" and set out a new regime which he said would put thrift at the heart of his government.
Other MPs have also rushed to declare they are paying back expenses which could be seen as unethical.
